Thirty-Six

Bryce

“Well, all wasn’t lost after all,” Tad says as he saves Enrique’s number into his phone.

After the false alarm, we headed back out to the pool, and though I wasn’t able to shake free of my anxiety from believing Tad’s life was in danger, Tad didn’t seem to have any problem picking up where he left off with his new trick, who was quick to give him his digits.

We head down the hallway, back to Tad’s room. Tad sips on a Mai Tai as he begins a text to Enrique.

“Have you considered,” I say, “that if you fuck Enrique and the media gets wind of it, you’re going to look like an ass who’s cheating on me?”

“Do you expect me to just sit around and be a prude through our fictitious relationship to keep out of trouble? Are you fucking kidding me?”

“I’m just telling you—”

“Something that’s not any of your goddamn business. Me making money or getting the next major ad campaign doesn’t have anything to do with you. Your job is to make sure I don’t die, and to keep up the appearance of this relationship to have an excuse to be around.”

“Whatever. I warned you.”

We approach the elevator and wait a few moments before the door opens and we step in together. As the doors close, we stand in awkward silence.

“If you were fucking me,” he says, “then I wouldn’t have to be looking for it somewhere else.”

I want to throw him up against the wall and give him exactly what he wants.

“I’m not discussing this again. You know I have good reasons for what I’m doing. But you obviously don’t give a shit about your career any more than your life.”

“You can’t keep giving me shit for jumping in front of that gun, considering you were about to do the same for me.”

“That’s my job.”

“And what kind of job is that? What kind of guy takes on a job where he knows he could be gone tomorrow?”

“I don’t have a good answer for you.”

“I didn’t imagine there was a good answer, but I was just wondering if there was any answer.”

I wish I could say something noble…or altruistic. I wish I had something that wouldn’t make me sound like the most fucked-up son of a bitch in the world. But I can’t.

The doors open, and Tad heads to his room. I follow close behind. As we reach our respective rooms, we get our keys out. As we put them in, he looks to me like he’s searching for an answer. Like he expects me to say something. Anything.

“Killing yourself won’t bring Jeff back,” he says, once again tearing into my soul with the subject that hurts me most.

Before I know it, I’m in his face, backing him up against the door.

Though his expression is cold, I can tell it’s an act because he’s trembling.

“I don’t mind you picking at me about a lot of things, but that isn’t one of them. He was my everything. He was the only reason…”

I stop myself.
